Botany Buddy Collections

Postby chopper » Wed Nov 04, 2009 8:43 pm

A project new project that we working on is building some presorted collections that Botany Buddy would like to share users. These would be groups of plants that we would have already put together that you could request and receive through the Buddy System. Some of the things we are looking at are deer resistance, salt resistance, natives and invasive lists by state, trees with interesting bark, and also some regional groupings. One of our long term goals is to actually add a filter for collections so that you can search within these or any collection. There are lots of ways to group plants that as designers or gardeners we are always looking to find a list for and we want to create those lists for you.

The idea is that we would host these collections in our upcoming web app and you would be able to share them with friends or send them to your iPhone app for easy reference. You would be able to browse these collections almost like shopping the departments in a nursery or any other store. The only difference is we wouldn't be trying to sell you anything. We would just have them there for your easy reference. These would be cultural groupings that don't fit easily into a search filter, but users need none the less.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We will do the work, but we need your input on what is important to you. If you could reply to this post, and give us your thoughts we will make sure and create the collections you want. If you have been working with us already you know we love your input, and we just look at this as one more way we can grow together.

Thanks, and I look forward to your thoughts!

I would start with a system much like these two books provide:
New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book of Lists [Paperback]
http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Gardener ... 0878338446
The Southern Gardener's Book of Lists: The Best Plants for All Your Needs, Wants, and Whims [Paperback]
http://www.amazon.com/York-Mid-Atlantic ... 0878332618

They have been very informative for me. Lists include:
Trees for wet sites
trees for dry sites
Fast Growing Trees
Trees for the Beach
Trees for Poor Sandy Soils
Columnar Evergreens
Trees for Tough Urban Sites
Trees to try in Containers
Evergreen Trees to hide Ugly Views
Small Trees for Patios and under utility lines
Trees Grass is impossible to grow under
Trees with Fragrant Blossoms
Substitiutes for Bradford Pears
Shrubs with Bold, Coarse Texture
Shrubs that make good ground covers
Shrubs for Espalier
Shrubs for Minature hedges
Narrow, Upright Shrubs for Tight Places
Low Shrubs that wont hide windows

Thats Just a small sample of the lists prepared in those books. Good luck with the project. I love the application and look forward to being involved in the community.
